How do I make a podcast?
Podcasts are all the rage now. But what IS a podcast? And how do you make one? Like most creative things, making your own podcast is easier said than done. But it’s also quite a lot of fun - and in a world where authenticity and branding is vital to business success, having a good podcast is no longer a luxury, it’s a necessity.
Luckily, I’m here to walk you through starting your own podcast in three simple steps! (Note: I said simple, not easy)
0. Learn what a podcast is
Okay, so you know you NEED a podcast, but… why? Put simply, podcasts are “radio on demand.” Just like Netflix is TV that you can watch at any time, podcasts are radio shows that you can listen to at any time. Usually, they sound similar to early-morning talk shows (some of which even have their own podcasts). And just like radio, podcasts are FREE. Their value comes not from subscriptions, but from the authentic connection your listeners make with you. Speaking of value…
Growing up in Wisconsin, I listened to a LOT of Bob & Brian.
1. Figure out why you want a podcast
What is the one reason you want to make your podcast? You probably have a few, but I want you to pick just one. Because at the end of the day, when you have to make decisions about your show, you’ll want to know why you’re making it. Here are some example reasons:
Tell a story
Expand your personal brand
Market your business
Make money through ads
Feel less bad about watching Parks and Recreation for the 50th time
2. Find your story
So you’ve figured out your why - now it’s time to figure out your what. What are you going to talk about each episode? Maybe you already have a story you want to tell, or maybe you just have a general subject in mind. Regardless of where you’re starting, your premise should be one thing above all else: specific.
In podcasting, specificity is king.
Instead of talking about cars, talk about your favorite type of car. Instead of watching all movies, explore Hallmark love stories. The more specific your show, the more devoted your fanbase is going to be - after all, if they don’t listen to your show, they might not have anybody to listen to at all!
Who would want to listen to a podcast entirely about 1-star reviews? A lot of people, actually!
3. Pick your name
Okay, time for some fun! What on Earth are you going to call your podcast? In my experience, a good podcast name has the following three traits:
It’s short
It’s descriptive
It’s unique
Come up with a list of 3-5 names and ask your friends what they think a podcast with that name would be about. If they can guess the general subject of your show, then you’ve got a good name!
If I told you to listen to “Dead To Me,” would you know what podcast I’m talking about?
4. Everything else
Surprise! There’s a lot more than three steps. A LOT MORE. For example:
Choosing your format/structure
Getting co-hosts and guests
Purchasing recording equipment
Finding (or making) a recording space
Recording a pilot episode
Editing your pilot episode
Creating your show’s logo
Publishing your podcast on all podcasting apps (there are dozens)
Making a website for your podcast
Doing that all again for every single episode
It’s a lot, but if you’ve made it this far, I truly believe you can do it. And I can help! Book a free 30-minute consultation, and let’s talk about how we can share your story with the world.
